Closure Update

UPDATE March 30, 2022: We are again seeking a live-in caregiver. The current job posting can be found here. Please help us spread the word!

(updated: April 9, 2021)

Dear Wellspring House Community,

As always, we hope this update finds you healthy, safe, and in good spirits. With a new year already in full swing and with spring clearly upon us, we wanted to reach out to share news of two sizable changes here at Wellspring House.

After twenty-two years as an artists and writers residency retreat, we have decided that it is time to close Wellspring House for good. This was a tough decision for all of us, but given continued concerns over the pandemic and evolving necessities with our director’s care, it has become clear that this is the right decision and the right time to make this important transition. Your stays at Wellspring House have been magical and so necessary — for the wonder of the space itself, for continuously motivating Preston and his late wife Ann, and for the good of the culture at large. So much beauty has bloomed here!

Our second change involves staffing at Wellspring House. We are ending the Writer-in-Residence program, with enormous gratitude to the most recent Writers-in-Residence, John Howard and Aubrey Crosby, for two wonderful years. Preston will continue to reside on location and we are looking to hire someone to live on-site and assist with his care. Details about this new residential position can be found here. Please help us find just the right person by spreading the word! Or consider applying yourself. Applications are due May 15, 2021, and the start date for this contracted position is June 21. Questions about the opportunity can be sent to John, via our Wellspring House email address, wellspringhouseretreat@gmail.com.

To celebrate the last twenty-two years of creative community here at Wellspring House, we welcome you to send testimonials, both written and photographic (if available), that we might share with our community on social media. Those celebratory notes can be sent along to our email address when available. Please also note: we hope to have a closing celebration for Wellspring House in late June, around the time of Preston’s ninety-second birthday. If at all possible, we would love to have a safe, socially-distanced outdoors event on the lawn. So please stay tuned for continued updates about that possible event.

Thank you all for your continued support and care. Wellspring House would have been an empty space if it weren’t for all the creativity you brought with you during your stays. These rooms still shimmer with the magic you brought to them, and it is that shimmering power we’d like to now celebrate as our time as a residency retreat comes to a close.

Many Thanks,

The Wellspring House Staff
